| Macmillan has commissioned our client to research on their behalf.
They are looking for males and females aged 18+ who have been diagnosed with cancer in the last 5 years to trial an app for 12 weeks. All to be from Black, Asian or other ethnic backgrounds OR from LGBTQ backgrounds. (any ethnicity) · Some are experiencing additional health conditions, including cancer or struggling financially who are currently receiving cancer treatment and some who are post-treatment, but they are still experiencing/living with symptoms from the cancer. · All t have been diagnosed within the last 5 years – and all must be over 6 weeks ago, so it’s not too raw · This research is for Macmillan Cancer Support, which has partnered with a digital self‑management app designed to help people log and track health information during their cancer journey. · This is an important piece of research, and your involvement will help Macmillan understand the value of digital self-management solutions for people with cancer and inform their future direction in this area. During this interview, we will be asking participants to share experiences related to cancer, so it’s important that you feel comfortable engaging in conversations on this topic.
You will then be trialling the app over 12 weeks, but please be assured there is no pressure to continue using the app throughout the full 12 weeks.
If you don’t find it useful, we are happy for you to stop using it whenever you want. We don’t want you to continue using it just because this is a research process. We just want you to use it if it is useful for you. We are interested in understanding your natural relationship with it to assess its genuine relevance and usefulness – so if it isn’t useful and you don’t want to use it, that is an important thing for us to learn. But if you do find it useful, then you’ll be able to use it for the whole 12 weeks of the trial and to continue using it after that.
You will be asked to complete three short surveys on your experience of using the digital self-management app, each taking around 10 minutes. You will be required to complete all 3 surveys, even if you haven’t used the app for long.
These surveys will be sent to you and will come at three points in the process:
at the start, just after the initial call; after 6 weeks (mid-way through the trial) and after 12 weeks (at the end of the trial). Breakdown of the research question:
Stage 1 20 – 30-minute introduction with a trained researcher. This will be an opportunity to talk through the research activities and ask any questions or raise any concerns you may have about taking part. You will then be asked to download and register the digital self-management health app on your smartphone. You will be asked to complete three short surveys on your experience of using the digital self-management app, each taking around 10 minutes. This will happen after registration, midway through check-in, and again at the end. You will be required to complete all 3 surveys. Please be assured there is no pressure to continue using the app throughout the full 12 weeks—we are interested in understanding your natural relationship with it to assess its genuine relevance and effectiveness. You will also be invited to join a dedicated, encrypted WhatsApp channel with a trained researcher, which will remain open throughout the 12 weeks. We would ask you to share brief updates or reflections via messages as you move through the process.
STAGE 2 Selected participants will be invited to take part in a 60‑minute one‑to‑one online interview, conducted via Zoom. This will take place either midway through the project or at the end. Selected participants will receive an additional £30 for their participation. The information you enter on the app should reflect your real-life experience; your lived experience is central to evaluating the app’s value. Our surveys and conversations will focus on your experience of using the app, rather than on your health, illness, or treatment itself. Further information about how your data will be stored and used can be found here: [insert link]. Please be assured that all responses will be anonymised and no personal information will be attributed to you. Those taking part will receive £150 via a Gift Pay voucher, which can be spent at Amazon and lots of other places, for completing ALL OF THE RESEARCH – the introduction call, participating on the WhatsApp channel, and 3 surveys during the 12-week process.
